Your home is probably filled with expensive items, such as a television,
stereo system, video recorder, dvd player, jewellery and so on –
if you add up the cost of all the valuable items contained in your
home you will probably be surprised at just how much it all costs.
If you had to replace the items you would be faced with a substantial
bill, and would most likely not be able to afford to cover the costs
– this is why contents insurance is such a good idea.
Contents insurance covers the items inside your home against loss
and in most cases against damage as well. Anything from a burst
water pipe, to burglary and fire can cause a number of your household
items to be destroyed, and while insurance cannot prevent the hassle
of having to clear up after the event and replace the items lost,
it does however remove the financial pressures by covering the cost
of replacement.
When arranging your contents insurance you will need to decide
on the level of cover that you require, in terms of the total value
of the items you want to cover, and the specifics of what is covered,
such as whether fixtures such as carpets and kitchens are insured.
The level of cover that you choose will most probably depend on
how much you are willing to pay on your premiums, if you have recently
decorated and fitted a new designer kitchen for example, then it
may pay you to get the best cover otherwise you could end up out
of pocket should the worst happen.
There is often confusion among people with regards to home insurances,
to clarify contents insurance covers items within the property and
often also provides cover for items in locked garages and sheds,
and in most cases covers fixtures within the home like fitted bedroom
units and kitchens. It does not cover against damage to the structure
of the building, for that you need buildings insurance.
Arranging contents insurance needn’t be difficult, there
are many providers to choose from and those that we have highlighted
here are both very good insurers to turn to when looking to get
your insurance.
Many people will already have buildings insurance in place, as
mortgage providers require it to be in place as a condition of the
mortgage agreement. Contents insurance is sometimes included with
buildings insurance, however in most cases if you wish to cover
your possessions within your home you will need to arrange separate
contents insurance.
